For Bikers and Hikers: TrailTracks!

STOP LOOK!

Using the corridor (we call The TrailTracks) created by the unused train tracks along 1st Avenue South, we envision a pedestrian walkway, a trolley, a bike trail, and/or an occasional Art Walk  from The Cultural Crossroads at Railroad Park to Sloss Furnaces eventually mapping all tourism destinations within walking distance.  We see it as Birmingham’s indigenous equivalent of San Antonio’s River Walk with a similar rich (but industrial) history. (See images below.)  We think that ISTEA (pronounced ‘iced tea”) federal matching funds, commonly used for similar trails projects, could possibly be used to develop this corridor.
